Join us in Curie Hall 200 on Thursday, May 1, 2025 for a discussion on the Philosophies of Ubuntu & Global Citizenship with Dr. Chika Esiobu, the ²©ÓãÌåÓýing Assistant Professor of African Studies and Dr. Tetsushi Ogata, ²©ÓãÌåÓýing Assistant Professor of Peace and Conflict Studies, Managing Director of the Soka Institute for Global Solutions.

Dr. Chika Esiobu's work is grounded in the role of indigenous knowledge as a foundational pathway to societal and planetary transformation. Her interests span multiple areas and disciplines, with a focus on Africa, traditional ecological knowledge, education, and practices of healing and wholeness.

She is the author of Indigenous Knowledge and Education in Africa (Springer, 2019), along with numerous articles, essays, a TED Talk and the documentary film Abagore.

Dr. Tetsushi Ogata has organized numerous peacebuilding training workshops. While at George Mason University, he organized genocide prevention workshops for more than 80 UN member states and supported the launch of national committees for genocide prevention in the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region in Africa. At UC Berkeley, he organized China-Taiwan cross-strait dialogue workshops.

Now at SIGS, he runs nuclear disarmament education workshops for college students and middle and high school teachers. Drawing from these practices, he will discuss the philosophy of global citizenship.
